Overview

This landmark hotel with views over Morecambe Bay was first opened in the 1930s, and after careful restoration it now welcomes guests looking for a stylish seaside stay -- the illustrious list of former residents includes Shirley Bassey, the Rolling Stones and George Formby. Designed by British architect Oliver Hill, it is built in the Streamlined Moderne style of Art Deco, with a curved white facade and stylish central tower and rotunda, and carvings by Eric Gill.

The beach is on the doorstep, and you can take an easy stroll to the town centre's shops and bars along the promenade. The Platform live entertainment venue is just behind the hotel, while Happy Mount Park with its scenic pathways, Japanese garden, mini golf and bowling green is five minutes' drive away.

Nearby Lancaster offers a pleasant day out and can be reached in around 20 minutes by car or train. Its medieval castle is described by English Heritage as the "Northwest's most important historic and archaeological monument". The city is known for its attractive Georgian architecture. The Butterfly House and the Ashton Memorial in the 54-acre Williamson Park are worth a visit. The South Lakes, including the pretty village of Lakeside and bustling Bowness-on-Windermere, is around 40 minutes' drive away.

The Sun Terrace is an AA-Rosette-awarded restaurant boasting views over the bay through its floor-to-ceiling windows. You can enjoy a variety of cocktails and drinks in the Ravilious Rotunda Bar. Guests can use The Sandpiper Club health and spa facilities at Lancaster House, the hotel's sister property, which is 25 minutes' drive by car near Lancaster.

Rooms have a double or twin beds, luxury toiletries and a selection of refreshments, plus a TV and free Wi-Fi.

We enjoyed the Sunday lunch and breakfast but the lounge area had no wow factor at all. We didn’t like the plastic chairs in such a lovely dining room either. We couldn’t get any hot water later in the evening. I rand reception and she said she would check the boiler. The water was ok in the morning but temperamental.

We got a good price booking through Travelzoo and we got a lovely room. The offer was with a bottle of Prosecco in room on arrival. This did not happen and we had to ask reception for it.

Our room was beyond expectations, with a wonderful view across the bay and a balcony to enjoy it from. The food was excellent, from dinner at sunset to a great breakfast.

I have long wanted to stay at this hotel being an admirer of all things Art Deco. However the moment I walked into reception I felt let down. The entrance was very shabby , carpet was dirty & furnishings scuffed.
Other Comments
The bedroom was another let down. All furnishings were cheap & not cheerful - I felt as though I were in a teenagers bedroom. Dingy colour scheme - it reminded me of a Premier Inn or a Travelodge. On the plus side, the staff were friendly. The evening meal & breakfast were good. Although the maitre de chewed gum the entire evening whilst walking through restaurant. It was clean . The views were marvellous.
