  • The secluded ruins of Wycoller Hall is 30 minutes away by car -- it is thought to be the inspiration for Ferndean Manor in Charlotte Bront?'s novel Jane Eyre

Best Western Burnley West Higher Trapp Hotel is a traditional hotel overlooking the pleasant Lancashire countryside, surrounded by terraced gardens within its own 36-acre parkland on the slopes of Pendle Hill. It is near the Forest of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, providing a comfortable base for a walking holiday.

You can embark on a rewarding hike along the 45-mile Pendle Way footpath. The route is divided into eight sections, the closest of which is around nearby Newchurch-in-Pendle and Barley, within a 15-minute drive from the hotel. The area covers a variety of terrains, ranging from rugged millstone moorland to limestone meadows, and there are quaint villages and hamlets along the way associated with the Bront? sisters and the 17th-century trials of the Pendle Witches. The Elizabethan country house of Gawthorpe Hall is just over 10 minutes' drive from the hotel. You can take a stroll through the gardens with views over the River Calder, visit the Gawthorpe Textile Collection or sample some cake in the tea room

Back in the hotel, leather sofas and ornate ceilings create a warm, friendly atmosphere. You can relax in the conservatory or sit outside and take in the views from the terrace when the sun is out. Fitzy's Bar & Restaurant has floor-to-ceiling windows and offers "local classics and more adventurous dishes", says The AA.

Standard Rooms are furnished in traditional style and have a double bed with crisp cotton sheets. All rooms come with large flatscreen TVs and free high-speed Wi-Fi.

We booked this hotel for it s location also it was dog friendly, ideal for us as we intended to do some country walks. The deal we got from Travel Zoo was excellent,so many little extras and a late check out 2pm was a bonus.

Even though there was a wedding booked for the date we stayed it did nt interfer with our stay . Our room was in the block away from the hotel which was perfect as we had our dog with us plus there was amazing views from there. First class hospitality from all the staff, they were lovely and very welcoming, even the gardener stopped to speak to us, think the dog made us very popular.

We were put in the lodge due to three weddings. I would advise that the carpet in room 28 is replaced as it is slippy and I fell but not badly hurt.

Liked the location, staff and our room (no. 21) The bathroom was quite small in relation to the room size and needed a refurb. Food was good for the dinner menu. Breakfast was good, although poached eggs had to be sent back as they were hard. We did have a problem when checking out. We were charged for 2 bottles of wine when we only had 1, but this was soon rectified. Would probably go back again.

We booked for 2 nights on the walking package as we wanted to explore the area. The “pack” wasof very limited use, but the packed lunch, though basic, was welcome as it saved us having to shop. The option of a sandwich or salad bowl was a nice touch.. Our room was small, though adequate, with only a double bed. It did however have a lovely view across the valley. The food was ok and the a la carte menue reasonably priced. The claim that the set menu was worth £26.50 seemed overinflated, especially when an allowance of only £15was offered against main menu dishes - a fact not mentioned in your advertising and which caused at least one customer a face off with staff which was very embarrassing for all in the dining room. We did not always get the food as advertised, eg, the Lancashire cheese sandwich turned out to be tasteless grated cheddar, and the pear and walnut salad with the pate wasn’t!
