Why We Love This Hotel

  • This cosy hotel is in a picturesque village in Northumberland, 10 minutes' drive from Hadrian's Wall
  • The restaurant serves local produce and has won multiple awards for sustainability
  • You can stargaze at the on-site observatory, under the darkest skies in England (supplements apply)

Battlesteads Hotel & Restaurant is an 18th-century former farmhouse in the village of Wark, which is bounded by the River North Tyne and is 10 minutes' drive from Chesters Roman Fort, a well-preserved cavalry fort that's part of Hadrian's Wall.

Northumberland has the darkest skies in England, so the hotel's observatory is a great place to stargaze (an extra £22.50 per person). Northumberland National Park, "England's last great wilderness... 405 square miles of natural wonderland" (Lonely Planet), is also a 10-minute drive from the hotel.

Hexham Abbey and Vindolanda -- an excavated Roman village with bath-house ruins -- are both less than 30 minutes' drive away. You can also drive 90 minutes to the coast to visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, or watch the sun set behind Bamburgh Castle.

The property has impressive eco-friendly credentials. It won the AA Eco Hotel of the Year Award 2016-17 and the Sustainable Tourism Award in the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2017, and boasts a Green Tourism Gold award, too. Seasonal ingredients are grown in the kitchen gardens, and the bar serves Fairtrade wines and ales from local microbreweries.

Dogs can stay in some rooms for an extra £10 per night (payable direct to the hotel).

Ask reception for a leaflet of local walks.

The en-suite bathroom had a problem with the extractor fan. It turned on and off at random. \\\\\\\even when the light was off.

Very enjoyable trip. The facilities in the luxury lodges are excellent, consisting of a large living area and bathroom (we have stayed in bedrooms smaller than the bathroom). The 8 course tasting dinner was well presented and each course explained - within each course there was a selection of items, so the chef had to work hard - I also partook of the wine accompaniment being as it was my birthday. The service was exemplary managed by a lady from the Czech Republic.

Wonderful location and fantastic fresh, local food. We had the 8 course taster menu which was absolutely delicious. We were given a tour of the hotel's own smokehouse, which had just provided the superb saucusson sec fof our taster menu.

Relaxed, lovely hotel with a beautiful garden and great for walks near the North Tyne River which runs through the village.
