"We stayed here for two nights and were allocated a Four Poster Room in the courtyard. The room was large and included two chairs and a table. The smart ensuite with a double glass sink was also quite big and had a shower over the bath. There is plenty of parking and the breakfast in the Verderer's Room was plentiful and very tasty. The friendly and efficient staff made our stay even more enjoyable than expected. Should the same offer be available again at a time of our suiting then we would have no hesitation in staying here again."

Why We Love This Hotel

  • This hotel is in rural Gloucestershire, in the centre of one of England's oldest oak forests
  • Dining options include The Orangery, which serves traditional pub food, and a formal restaurant
  • It's five miles from the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and 13 miles from the famous Tintern Abbey ruins
  • Symonds Yat Rock, where you can take in views of the River Wye from 120 metres up, is 10 minutes' drive away
  • The property can offer discounts on local bike hire for exploring the surrounding forest cycle paths

Overview

With wall-mounted stag heads, oak-beamed ceilings and a weathered yellow-stone exterior, The Speech House Hotel's origin as a hunting lodge for King Charles II is clear throughout.

It's in the Forest of Dean, which is said to have inspired JRR Tolkien's Middle Earth and also featured in "Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows". Symonds Yat Rock, 20 minutes' drive away in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has views of the River Wye from 120 metres up, and is popular with hikers and birdwatchers (peregrine falcons nest on the surrounding cliffs).

You can hire kayaks and Canadian canoes for a paddle on the River Wye at the Monmouth Canoe and Activity Centre, which is 20 minutes' drive away, or take a ride on the Dean Forest Railway, which operates steam and diesel trains from Lydney to Parkend; Norchard station, which also has a museum, is around 10 minutes' drive from the hotel.

The ruins of Goodrich Castle, a Norman fortress with great views from the battlements, and Tintern Abbey -- the inspiration for Wordsworth's famous poem -- are both within 25 minutes' drive of the hotel, as is Kymin Hill, which features a charming 18th-century round house and naval temple overlooking Monmouth and the Wye Valley.

The Orangery and bar serves light lunches, fresh coffee and traditional pub food. The restaurant has been a court for the local Verderers (who meet four times a year to discuss the protection of the forest) since 1696, and it serves an à la carte menu and homemade desserts. Wi-Fi is free in public areas. Courtyard rooms are in external buildings behind the main house.

Our meal in the Orangery on the first night was delicious but feel there are better and cheaper places to eat within an easy drive of the hotel.

The main hotel was lovely , just a shame we weren't in it! Presuming this was because we had our dog with us. We seemed to be in some sort of gardeners quarters, laughingly called the cottage. We felt very out of it all. When going into the hotel proper for meals it was a lovely experience and the staff were friendly and helpful. It was dog friendly in the Orangery and the gardens and there was a great field to walk him round attached to the grounds. It's hard to do the star ratings as we had such a diverse experience. The hotel was lovely, where we were billeted wasn't. I would recommend it if you didn't have to stay in the cottage. The history and atmosphere of the place, and service we received in the main hotel softened the blow a bit, but we were left with a sense of disappointment every time we crossed the courtyard on our walk of shame back to our room.

Good. Staff friendly, although it appeared some of the waiting staff were in training - they will get there but needed prompting regarding incomplete orders, saying they couldn't ask kitchen staff our question as kitchen seemed too busy to disturb etc.. Hope kitchen staff aren't really too intimidation to new staff!

Hotel has that shabby lived in feel - clean but comfortably shabby! Courtroom floor creaky with every step. Previously had main house attic room, which we would prefer again for any future visit.

We enjoyed our stay there. It is located in the heart of Forest of Dean and with easy access to many woods for lovely walks, and some activities.

If you have a dog take it with you it will be welcomed and it will love all the amazing walks adjacent to the hotel.

Good location for exploring the area. The hotel is sited right on a fairly busy road but we did not find it intrusive. If you are in the main hotel and in one of the rooms 6-15 you have 40 stairs to climb

Excellent professional staff with great customer service. Really loved that it was dog friendly and a great secure beer garden at the back. It's also fantastic for walks as you step out of the front door and you're spoilt for choice!
