Malmaison Birmingham is a boutique hotel with sexy Gothic-style bedrooms and a great location in The Mailbox, a designer shopping centre by the canal. The hotel is rich in facilities, including an AA-Rosette-awarded brasserie restaurant, Gymtonic gym and a "small but sumptuous" spa (Town & Country Magazine) with a Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, leather massage chairs and latest ESPA spa treatments.
Set in The Mailbox shopping emporium, the hotel shares its address with Harvey Nichols, a new Everyman Cinema and a large range of restaurants. It's a 10-minute walk to the Barclaycard Arena for comedy, concerts and sports, and 15 minutes on foot to shops and restaurants at the Bullring, Birmingham’s other main shopping centre. Other nearby attractions include the Ikon Gallery, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, and the Library of Birmingham -- “an architectural triumph” (Lonely Planet), which houses photography exhibitions, a Shakespeare Memorial Room and a 7th-floor secret garden with excellent city views. New Street and Moor Street train stations can both be reached within 15 minutes by foot.
The Chez Mal Brasserie & Bar serves food that is "a hit with guests and locals alike", according to The AA. The menu covers classics like moules frites and burgers, and there’s a keenly priced dish of the day. Breakfast is a continental buffet with the option to add on a cooked breakfast for a couple of pounds more, and on Sunday you can tuck into a 3-course brunch buffet. Given a makeover in early 2015, the brasserie now sports a conceptual-art-inspired neon sign, exposed bricks and leather bar stools, yet continues to serve crowd-pleasing themed cocktails and an all-day menu of bar bites and sandwiches.
Bedrooms are large, with comfy beds, soft pillows and free Wi-Fi. The option to have a continental-style breakfast in bed is a real treat -- it arrives in a Perspex box and includes croissants, cereal, fruit, yoghurt, juice and coffee/tea. Upgrade to a Mal Club room with a classic Eames lounge chair for Sky Sports on the TV, a fully stocked mini bar and Lavazza coffee machine. Popular with celebrities like Beyoncé, the Penny Black Suite is has a 4-poster bed, a deluxe bath, an enormous cinema-style TV and a private steam room.
