Hunday Manor Country House Hotel is a 4-star property on the western edge of the Lake District. The 18th-century manor is set in spacious grounds, and offers "warm hospitality" and "wonderful views", says The AA.

For a coastal trip, the harbour town of Whitehaven is less than 10 minutes' drive away. It's home to over 250 listed buildings, a working harbour and a museum, The Rum Story, that tells the history of the UK's rum trade. The Lake District National Park is 15 minutes' drive away and the towns of Ambleside, Grasmere and Keswick are all within 50 minutes' drive.

There's lots to do while staying at the hotel -- you can visit The Lakes Distillery at Bassenthwaite, 20 minutes' drive away, or walk along the St Bees Head Heritage Coast, which is approximately 25 minutes' drive from the hotel. The AA-recommended Whinlatter Forest Park, a designated red squirrel reserve, is 30 minutes' drive from the hotel.

Hunday Manor is an intimate family-run hotel with 27 individually decorated rooms. The restaurant serves set-menu and à la carte meals in the evening. and there's also a cosy lounge and bar, complete with log fires, where you can relax after a day of walking or an indulgent dinner.

Staff were friendly and respectful and made us very welcome. The room was beautiful, although a bit warm. It would benefit from air conditioning. The gin cocktail was a nice touch and the Cumbrian breakfast was gorgeous. Overall the hotel was grand yet cosy and ideal for exploring the coast and the lakes. The views really are like on the photos! Thank you for a lovely break.

Most of the staff were getting on in years and were forgetful of things, especially at meal times. The location was isolated but this was not highlighted on the website. If you wanted a drink at the bar you had to wait until someone was available.

The hand dryer in the gents at the reception area was broken and when it was reported to a member of staff, was told it had been that way for 3 months.
